Data Shows LI Nursing Homes With Most Coronavirus-Related Deaths

New York state health officials have released new data showing which Long Island nursing homes have been hit hardest by the new coronavirus.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Eleven Long Island nursing homes have seen at least 10 deaths related to the new coronavirus outbreak, and four of them saw more than 20 deaths, according to new data released this week by New York health officials.

At least 1,109 nursing home residents have died from the virus in New York, according to the data, including 122 in Nassau County and 123 in Suffolk. New York City saw 680 deaths.

Nineteen of the state’s nursing homes have each had at least 20 deaths linked to the pandemic, including a nursing home in Brooklyn that saw 55 deaths. Four in the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island saw more than 40.

But the data is incomplete. The list was based on a survey sent by the state seeking details, The Associated Press reported. Nursing homes had until 2 p.m. Thursday to respond.

Peconic Landing in Greenport, for example, previously told Patch nine residents had died from the COVID-19 disease. State data showed it reported six deaths. When asked Wednesday if there had been any additional deaths, new cases, or resolved cases, a spokesperson said it was no longer providing details on individuals' health status out of respect for residents' personal privacy.

Furthermore, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility in Uniondale has reported 17 deaths, but doesn't appear in the latest state data release.

Melissa De Rosa, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's top aide, told reporters Friday that he plans to sign an executive order requiring nursing homes to tell residents and their families of positive cases. Violators, she said, could face civil penalties.

The data comes as the number of coronavirus cases in New York topped 220,000 this week, including over 24,000 in Suffolk County and 27,000 in Nassau.

Below are the deaths reported at individual nursing homes on Long Island. The state noted the data was reported as of Wednesday. Some nursing homes included both suspected and confirmed COVID-19 deaths. Nursing homes that reported fewer than five deaths were excluded over privacy concerns.
