Duo Rescued After Kayak Overturns In Great South Bay

The man and woman were kayaking Sunday night when their craft started taking on water and overturned.

FIRE ISLAND, NY - Two people were rescued after their kayak overturned in the Great South Bay off of Fire Island Sunday night, according to Suffolk Police.

Officers Keith Magliola and Chris DeFeo were on patrol in the Great South Bay aboard Marine Kilo when they saw 27-year-old Ralph Tabaras and 26-year-old Jillyan Guadagno in the water next to their swamped kayak.

The two were found a quarter mile north of Ocean Bay Park on Fire Island at 6:55 p.m.

Tabaras and Guadagno had rented a kayak from The Palms Hotel on 168 Cottage Walk in Ocean Beach and paddled into the Great South Bay where their craft started taking on water and overturned.

The two Fire Island residents were successfully rescued from the water and transported back to Ocean Beach.

The kayak was also recovered from the water.

Both were wearing life jackets and neither was injured.
