New York Times Bestselling Author Visits Uniondale
Kwame Alexander Visits Smith Street Elementary School
Uniondale, N.Y. —Recently, scholars from Uniondale Union Free School District’s Smith Street Elementary School met with award-winning author, speaker and educator Kwame Alexander. Mr. Alexander spent his visit reading portions from his books and poems. Some books written by Mr. Alexander include Swing, Rebound, Solo and many more. During the event, scholars listened to Alexander read excerpts from one of his most famous novels, The Undefeated.
Kwame Alexander is not only a New York Times bestselling author, but also a well-known educator. He has won countless awards including the 2015 John Newbery Medal for his novel The Crossover. In addition, Mr. Alexander is the founder of a program in Ghana called LEAP. LEAP is an international literacy project that builds libraries, trains teachers and empowers children through literature.
Author visits such as the one given by Kwame Alexander are part of the District’s initiative to promote early childhood literacy. Kwame urges others, especially students, to read daily. At the end of the event, the scholars of Smith Street Elementary School received signed copies of his book, The Undefeated. This event was one the young scholars of Smith Street School will remember for years to come.
