TO BE KILLED - JULY 15, 2020 - Seal has til noon!!! :(
SEAL NEEDS SOMETHING THE SHELTER AIN'T OFFERING AND HE NEEDS IT ASAP - FREEDOM, CONSISTENCY, A PATIENT HUMAN AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE - We're on a mission to find that experienced and unwavering person for him. Please share this cutie to the moon and back. Just a babe, 1 year old Seal needs out! Seal is a young, enthusiastic dog with some challenging behavioral habits and a low threshold for arousal. That level of energy is always difficult to accommodate in a kennel environment and Seal is deteriorating. He's young, adorbs and friendly just the same. The kennel life isnt for Seal. Life started out on the wrong paw for Seal. Lets get things going in the right direction the second time.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
BEHAVIOR RATING:
The Behavior Team has developed a plan for working with Seal to provide enrichment and mental stimulation while also keeping him and his handlers safe. He gets multiple daily walks through the park and other visually stimulating areas that he can also sniff and investigate. He comes out into the yard to play and receive cue training, though has become increasingly difficult to manage outside in the yard as he is easily overstimulated in this setting, and engages a bit better with his environment when outdoors. While we try to provide as many outlets for his energy as we can, unfortunately he is becoming harder and harder to remove from his kennel. He kennel fights with other dogs and leash bites when being removed. We move all of the dogs in the room to the other side of the transfer door when taking him out, but he still always lunges at the empty kennels and it causes him a great deal of stress. He receives frequent varied in-kennel enrichment but favors chewing the drainage. In spite of our best efforts he needs more attention than we are able to offer so we are looking for a partner who can provide the exercise and the guidance for him to be successful.

Observed Behavior -Easy to leash and remove from kennel. Walked well on the leash. In the intake room, he was very hyper. Jumped up a lot and wanted to play. He would bark if we didn't play with him. Ate squeeze cheese ravenously. Hard to keep him calm for exam and tasks only because he had so much energy but no growling or trying to bite. He did leash bite when we placed him back in kennel.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of intake:17-Jun-2020
Summary:Loose body, jumps up
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial:17-Jun-2020
Summary:Allows handling, excitable, jumps up
ENERGY LEVEL:We have no history on Seal so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:During his stay at the care center Seal has been observed to allow some petting and will sit for treats but he jumps very high onto handlers, mouthing handlers with increasingly hard pressure. Seal reacts strongly when passing other kennels, cage fighting on his way in and out of the dog rooms.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:New Hope Only
Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:
No children: Due to the very high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend an adult only home.
Place with a New Hope partner: Seal displays a low threshold for arousal at the care center, quickly tipping into mouthing handlers with hard pressure and jumping up extremely high repeatedly. For these reasons, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges:
Basic manners/poor impulse control
Social hyperarousal
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Seal jumps up a lot on people in social manner. Please see handout on Basic Manners.
Arousal: Seal displays some arousal issues when with people, jumping up on them a lot and becoming very mouthy. The mouthiness has increased to him using hard pressure at times. He has also displayed a low threshold for arousal hen being removed from the kennel, grabbing leashes that attempts are made to remove him from the kennek with. Please see handout on Arousal.
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Seal is mouthy at the care center, applying hard pressure at times. Please see handout on Mouthiness.
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Seal has displayed some reactivity towards dogs at the care center, pulling towards them, whining, and barking. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
