New Data Shows LI Hospitals Nearing — Or Over — Capacity

LONG ISLAND, NY — Recently updated data released by the federal government shows how close hospitals on Long Island are to reaching capacity.

As Patch previously reported, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week published capacity data for tens of thousands of hospitals nationwide. The data painted a clearer picture about how many beds are available at each hospital. The new, more granular data aggregates daily hospital reports into a "week at a time" picture.

The new data showed many hospitals added capacity for the week of Dec. 5.

In Nassau County, Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside increased its adult inpatient beds to a seven-day average of 384.7 from 380.4. Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park increased its adult inpatient beds to 1,369.3 from 1,305.4.

In Suffolk County, Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead increased its adult inpatient beds to 147.1 from 128, while Stony Brook University Hospital upped its capacity to a seven-day average of 661 from 647.4.

The data also showed that as hospitals added beds, 14 saw an increase in their share of occupied adult inpatient beds for the same week.

At Mount Sinai, the percentage of occupied inpatient beds climbed 4 percentage points week-over-week to 85 percent as the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 — or suspected to have the disease — rose from 32.6 to 51.6. The share of people hospitalized in adult inpatient beds with COVID-19 increased from about 8.5 percent to over 13 percent.

At South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, formerly known as Southside Hospital, capacity rocketed from 92 percent all the way to 112 percent. A spokesman for Northwell Health told Patch on Monday this is a common occurance during a typical flu season. Hospitals operate effectively at full capacity, he said, and routinely exceed 110 percent capacity, as many patients are kept overnight in the emergency room department. Northwell is less concerned with hospital capacity, he said, and moreso with staffing those extra beds.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said the state is reaching out to tens of thousands of retired nurses and doctors to help address potential staffing shortages and ease the burden facing health care workers.

However, health experts have said the share of coronavirus hospitalizations out of the total beds is key to understanding how hospitals are strained. If that percentage eclipses 10 percent, it's cause for concern, they said. Hospitals are considered to be under extreme stress when the share of coronavirus hospitalizations to total beds tops 20 percent, and immense stress as the number approaches 50 percent.
