Lower East Side School May Get Brand New Soccer Field, City Says
The NYC Soccer Initiative aims to build, maintain and program 50 mini soccer fields in underserved neighborhoods.
LOWER EAST SIDE, NY β Community Board 3 will meet this Thursday to discuss NYC Soccer Initiative's request for support to build a soccer field at P.S. 184 Shuang Wen at 327 Cherry St.
The NYC Soccer Initiative was started in July 2016 and aims to "build, maintain, and program 50 mini soccer fields in underserved neighborhoods across the five boroughs over the next five years," the program's website says.
Shuang Wen is a a bilingual elementary and middle school in Chinatown that serves Mandarin and English speakers in its dual language program. According to the school's website, there were 663 students enrolled in the 2015-2016 year.

The initiative is a public-private partnership between the city, US Soccer Foundation, Adidas and the NYC Football Club. All four partners invested a total of $3 million to build and maintain the fields.
The fields will serve 10,000 young New Yorkers and offer after-school soccer programs and mentoring programs, like soccer clinics, festivals, youth summits and night leagues.

The NYC Soccer Initiative will "promote physical health, youth development and community engagement" in these neighborhoods, the website states.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at The Lee on 133 Pitt St.
