Famous Graffiti Artist David Choe Finishes Houston Bowery Mural
The Houston Bowery Graffiti Wall has a new mural, this one by celebrity artist David Choe.
LOWER EAST SIDE, NY β The wall at Bowery and Houston streets is again a showcase for public art after the artist David Choe finished his mural there at about 4 a.m. Sunday.
Choe is the latest in a rotating cast of artists that have been brought in to reimagine the wall, which started its current role as a giant canvas in the 1970's after Keith Haring painted his iconic mural there. It's become such an iconic spot for public art that the slab of concrete is typically referred to as the Houston Bowery Graffiti Wall. The wall, owned by Goldman Properties, gets a new mural multiple times a year. Previously, a piece by the artist duo PichiAvo occupied the space.

Choe, whose artwork spans platforms and who completed a similar public art project in Miami, started work on March 28 before finishing at about 4 a.m. on Monday. The artist is one of the biggest names to work on the Houston Bowery wall. Choe got his start painting murals for Facebook's Silicon Valley offices in 2005. When Facebook execs offered Choe $60,000 or company stock to create a mural for the then-startup, he chose the stock. When Facebook went public years later, the graffiti artist suddenly owned stock worth $200 million. Since then, he's been a highly sought after graffiti artist.
