Lower East Side Candy Store To Close After 36 Years

The Sweet Life candy shop plans to shutter its doors at the end of the month after rising bills, The Lo-Down reported.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY β€” A candy store that has called Hester Street home for nearly 36 years plans to close at the end of the month, The Lo-Down reported.

The Sweet Life, at 63 Hester St., will shutter on June 30 after rising bills and repairs to the store made keeping the doors open impossible, the website reported.

"It’s a small business, and it is doing well, but the increased costs are a burden," owner Gloria Farewell told the Lo-Down. "It has been heart wrenching decision."

Farewell told the website the shop was hit with a $4,000 water bill recently after they already shelled out to repair water leaks from their roof and a rodent infestation in the basement.

The Sweet Life was opened by Jerry McCarthy on the corner of Hester and Ludlow streets in 1982, the New York Press reported.

McCarthy ran the shop with his wife, Terry McIlvaine, until the couple sold it in 2003 and Farewell eventually took it over in 2014.

The shop plans to run a 30 percent off sale on their candy until they close for good on June 30, according to the Lo-Down.
