Man Killed By Mock CIA Agent He Met On Facebook, Report Says

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — A man was beaten to death last week on the Lower East Side after being held hostage by somebody he met on Facebook and asked to move in with him and his wife, according to a news report and officials.

Doru Vaduvescu, 64, died Friday after Truman Dulaney, 46, beat him up a day before in his apartment at Henry and Clinton streets, cops said.

Cops found Vaduvescu Thursday about 4:30 p.m. with head and body injuries after a woman screamed for help inside the Lower East Side apartment, police said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he died Friday, according to police.

Sources told the New York Daily News, which first reported on the brutal beating, that Dulaney had masqueraded as a CIA agent in a chat group on Facebook and told Vaduvescu and his wife, Mimi, that he needed their help to "complete his missions."

An NYPD spokesperson could not confirm that Dulaney had pretended to be a CIA agent, but police told Patch that Dulaney had moved in with the Vaduvescu family about three months before the fatal beating after meeting on Facebook.

The News reported Dulaney had locked up Vaduvescu and his wife for 30 hours in the bedroom, forcing them to give their pin number to their bank account. When Dulaney left, Mimi Vaduvescu cried out the window for help and a neighbor called 911, according to the newspaper.

Dulaney was arrested and charged Thursday for assault, grand larceny, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
