NYU Seeks Approval For New Lower East Side Medical Center

NYU Langone Medical Center released initial plans for its new medical center at Essex Crossing.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY β€” NYC Langone Medical Center is gearing up for its new medical center that it plans to open here at the Essex Crossing development in 2018.

The long-awaited plans for the new hospital were released in March after NYU sought approval for the preliminary plans from the state's health department. The planned 55,000-square foot space will be part of the giant ongoing development at Essex Crossing, which is spanning multiple sites along the Lower East Side and includes residential, business and public space.

The new center, officially named the NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center at Essex Crossing, would be located at 175 Delancey St. The plans submitted to the state feature a "multi-speciality ambulatory surgery center" and space for physical therapy services. The bill for NYU's new outpost comes in at $32,855,854, according to the application it submitted to the state.

NYU said in its application that the additional operating rooms in the new center were much needed, pointing to the limited space and frequent use of its other hospitals in lower Manhattan.

The medical center would sit beneath a 10-story residential tower, according to the preliminary plans. NYU's application was first reported by Crain's New York. The state is still reviewing the plans.
