Off-Duty NYPD Officer Assaults Female Conductor on Train at Essex Street Station

According to the NYPD, a conductor was assaulted at the station on the Lower East Side, causing major delays on the line.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY β€” A female conductor was assaulted by an off-duty NYPD officer on a train at the Essex-Delancey J, M, Z station on Wednesday morning, resulting in an arrest and a mess of delays.

According to the NYPD, Tremel Davis, an off-duty police officer, was on-board a departing J train at the Essex Street-Delancey Street stop at 9 a.m. on Wednesday when the conductor opened the door inside the train and hit Davis. The two got into a verbal argument with Davis, 33, shoving the MTA employee to the ground. She suffered a minor arm injury, police said. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Davis was charged with assault Wednesday afternoon.

This isn't the first time Davis has run afoul of the law this year. He was arrested back in March and charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child after reportedly handling his 1-year-old niece roughly during an argument with his brother. Davis was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 15 over that case.

Everyone was removed from the train, and the off-duty officer was taken into custody without incident, but the delay caused massive problems for the J, M and Z lines entering Manhattan from Brooklyn. One train got stuck on the Williamsburg Bridge for nearly an hour, according to commuters.

The J, M and Z trains were back up and running by around 10 a.m.

The litany of complaints, as usual, were written all over Twitter.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated it was the train's doors which hit Davis. It was actually the door to the conductor's booth inside the car.
