Would-Be Rapist Attacks Woman On Lower East Side, Police Say

A bystander heard the woman's screams and intervened, scaring off the attacker, police said.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY β€” A man tried to rape a woman on a Lower East Side street early on Tuesday morning, police said.

The man has not been arrested and police are still searching for hime.

Police say that the 27-year-old woman was standing in a vestibule at 127 Ludlow St. on Tuesday at about 5:30 a.m. when the man approached her and began talking to her. The man proceeded to push the woman up against the wall and sexually assault her, police said.

A bystander heard the woman's screams and intervened, scaring away the attacker, police said. The man ran from the area.

The woman was treated for at a nearby hospital after the assault, police said.

Police released blurry surveillance photos of the suspect on Thursday and are working to identify and locate him.
