2021-22 School Budget Voters Guide: Mid-Hudson Valley

Voters in mid-Hudson Valley school districts will be going to the polls Tuesday. Here's what you need to know.

MID-HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Voters around the mid-Hudson Valley will be going to the polls Tuesday to approve their school district's budget, including the Poughkeepsie, Arlington, Newburgh and Wappingers districts.

Also on the ballot are elections for school board members and some other propositions.

In the Poughkeepsie school district, voters are being asked to approve a $108.2 million budget for the 2021-22 school year. That represents a budget increase of 3.57 percent and a 1.4 percent increase in the property tax levy.

Two trustee seats are open for full three-year terms. The candidates are incumbent Felicia Watson and Fatimah Carmen Luisa Martinez Santiago.

In the Wappingers school district, voters are being asked to approve a $256.4 million budget for the 2021-22 school year. That represents a budget increase of 4.64 percent and a 2.49 percent increase in the property tax levy.

There is also a proposition for bus replacement amounting to $2.2 million.

Four trustee seats are up for election. The candidates are Michael McFarland, Cherly Migatz, Keri Cahil, Robert Rubin and incumbents John S. Morgan and James Spencer.

In the Arlington school district, voters are being asked to approve a $233.6 million budget for the 2021-22 school year. That represents a budget increase of 3.97 percent and a 0.98 percent increase in the property tax levy.

There is also a proposition for bus and equipment replacement, amounting to $1.9 million.

Three trustee seats are open for full three-year terms. The candidates are Jeff Kobak, M.D., incumbent Charles McLeod Jr., incumbent Mary Anne Meaden, Dr. Larry Jeannotte, incumbent Edward L. McCormick and Dr. Karl A. Ziermann.

In the Newburgh school district, voters are being asked to approve a $293.2 million budget for the 2021-22 school year. That represents a budget increase of 2 percent and a zero percent increase in the property tax levy.

There is also a proposition to increase the buildings and facilities improvement reserve fund by $25 million and a proposition to authorize the Newburgh Free Library budget in the amount of $5,462,744 for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Three trustee seats are open for full three-year terms. The candidates are Dawn Fucheck, incumbent Ramona Burton, Renee Y. Greene, incumbent Philip Howard and Shoy Colbourne..
