Brooklyn Rock Climber Dies In Hudson Valley

She was climbing Sunday in the Shawangunk Mountains.

GARDINER, NY — A rock climber fell to her death Sunday at the Mohonk Preserve in the Shawangunk Mountains region of the Hudson Valley.

State police said they were called at 3:30 p.m. to the area of the Trapps Trailhead.

Lauren Sobel, of Brooklyn, New York, was a lead climber in a group of three, police said. Sobel, 25, was about 70 feet up the rock face and was setting protection gear in the rocks when she lost her grip and fell 50 feet, police said.

She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Troopers were assisted by the Mohonk Mountain Forest Rangers.
