Funeral Arrangements Announced For Maurice Hinchey

He served the Hudson Valley in Congress for 20 years.

SAUGERTIES, NY — Funeral arrangements have been announced for former Congressman Maurice Hinchey, who died at the age of 79 Wednesday, Nov. 22. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home in Saugerties. A funeral procession will form at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the corner of John and Lafayette streets and will travel to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Interment will be held privately.

Hinchey died at home after a long illness.

He served the public for 38 years, earning him the reputation as “the environmental hero of the Hudson Valley,” his obituary on the Seamon-Wilsey website said.

Hinchey was the first Democrat elected to the state Legislature from Ulster County since 1912 and only the second since the Civil War.

He served in Congress for 20 years, retiring Jan. 3, 2013.

Hinchey’s family announced in June that he was diagnosed with a terminal neurological disorder: frontotemporal degeneration.
