LI Man Killed In Orange County Motorcycle Crash

Police said the man was trying to change lanes when he overcorrected and struck the rear side of a car.

SPARROW BUSH, NY — A Long Island man was killed in a motorcycle crash in Orange County Saturday.

The New York State Police said, around 4 p.m., Leighton L. Douglas, 32, of Bayshore, was operating a 2019 red Ducati west on Route 97, also known as The Hawks Nest on the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.

Police said he was speeding and tried to pass a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta over the double yellow lines into the eastbound lanes, but saw a vehicle coming toward him.

Douglas quickly got back into the westbound lanes, but overcorrected and struck the earth embankment on the north shoulder.

His motorcycle then struck the rear passenger side of the Jetta causing the motorcycle to burst into flames, police said.

The Jetta's driver and passenger were not injured, police said. The driver immediately stopped his car and got out to render first aid to Douglas.

The Sparrowbush Fire Department arrived and put out the flames.

Douglas was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office.
