Neurologist Dr. Alexandr Safarov has joined Nuvance Health’s outpatient medical practice at Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC) in Poughkeepsie, NY. Dr. Safarov specializes in neurophysiology, which uses electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) studies to diagnose peripheral nervous system disorders.

Dr. Safarov gravitated toward neurophysiology because it was an area of medicine that intrigued him. He said using EEG and EMG studies allows neurologists to diagnose neurological diseases with more accuracy. Dr. Safarov also said he conducts thorough patient histories, making sure to ask the right questions and weigh all the details gathered in patient interviews.

“The most important thing is to carefully listen to the patient,” said Dr. Safarov.

After practicing as an independent physician in the community for many years, Dr. Safarov said he is excited to join Nuvance Health’s extensive network of neurology clinicians, allowing him to connect his patients to a wide spectrum of neurological care.

“We are thankful that Dr. Safarov is part of our team of progressive neuroscience specialists,” said Dr. Paul Wright, senior vice president and system chair of neurosciences for Nuvance Health. “Together with Dr. Safarov, we are expanding access to important diagnostic tests such as EEG and EMG, and streamlining care for neurological patients within one cohesive system.”

Joining Nuvance Health was also a personal decision for Dr. Safarov, who has lived in the Hudson Valley since 2007.

Dr. Safarov is a board-certified neurologist. He completed a fellowship in EEG and epilepsy at Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. Starting in 2016, he was named among Top Doctors by Hudson Valley Magazine for three consecutive years.

Dr. Safarov earned a medical degree from First Tashkent State Medical Institute in Uzbekistan. He completed a medical internship and neurology residency in Uzbekistan before immigrating to the United States. He completed a second medical residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY; and, a neurology residency at Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY which is nationally recognized for its neurology and neurosurgery divisions.

When not seeing patients, Dr. Safarov enjoys playing chess, soccer, and hiking around the Hudson Valley area with his wife and three children. He is fluent in Armenian and Russian, and he recently learned how to skateboard.
