Northern Duchess Hospital Appoints New Medical Director

Dr. R. Cenk Pekis, a psychiatrist with more than 20 years of experience has been appointed as medical director at the Paul Rosenthal Center.

From Northern Dutchess Hospital (Healthquest): Northern Dutchess Hospital recently appointed Dr. R. Cenk Pekis as the medical director of its Paul Rosenthal Rehabilitation Center.

The New Hartford, Oneida County, native relocated to Rhinebeck and joined Health Quest Medical Practice, a physician group affiliated with Northern Dutchess. He oversees the hospital’s acute rehabilitation center.

The 10-bed unit offers physical, occupational and speech therapies combined with around-the-clock nursing to help patients achieve independence after strokes, hip or knee surgery, brain injuries and more.

Since 1997, Pekis has been a physiatrist — a physician who helps patients with disabilities. He has held positions at several rehabilitation facilities in Florida and upstate New York, including Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica.

Previously, he taught physical medicine rehabilitation at the State University of New York’s Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and has more than 20 years of experience in the medical specialty.

He was born in Turkey and graduated from Istanbul University with a medical degree. In 1994, he completed an internship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Massachusetts. In 1997, he finished his residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.
