Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Car in Mid-Hudson Valley

The woman, who was walking in a crosswalk, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital.

VALATIE, NY — A pedestrian died after being hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk Monday in Columbia County.

The New York State Police said, around 12:20 p.m., troopers were waved down by good Samaritans alerting them to a pedestrian being struck by a car at the intersection of Main and Church streets in Valatie.

The Valatie Rescue Squad responded and took the pedestrian to Albany Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Authorities said the initial investigation found a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser driven by David L. Parlman, 26, of Chatham, was traveling east on Main Street and made a left turn onto Church Street.

Police said, for unknown reasons, Parlman struck Joan E. Gavigan, 77, of Valatie, who was walking west on Main Street inside a marked pedestrian crosswalk.

Gavigan was later pronounced deceased by the attending physician at Albany Medical Center.

The investigation remains ongoing, police said.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office and Valatie Fire Department were also at the scene rendering aid.
