Pedestrian Killed By Car In Town Of Newburgh

A trooper happened to be nearby when the accident occurred.

NEWBURGH, NY — An 80-year-old Kingston man was killed while walking along the highway in Newburgh.

The New York State Police said, around 11:15 p.m. Friday, a trooper had stopped a car on Route 17K when he heard an accident happen behind him.

A Nissan Rogue with front-end damage was on the opposite side of the road with a man lying on the pavement in front of the vehicle.

The trooper ran to the man and began administering CPR. At the same time, he notified Orange County 911.

Town of Newburgh EMS arrived a short time later and took over life-saving measures.

The victim, John C. Peda, 80, of Kingston, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

An investigation found the driver of the Nissan was not impaired, and no charges are pending at this time.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
