Assemblyman Challenges Maloney For 2022 Congressional Election
Colin Schmitt said he would defend residents' values and improve their quality of life, opposing Democrats' radical socialist ideology.

MONTGOMERY, NY — Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt announced he is running for Congress, kicking off his campaign for the 2022 18th Congressional District election Tuesday at an event in front of Montgomery Village Hall.
He was joined by family, friends, constituents, and community leaders near the “Little Red School House” Montgomery Nursing School, the school Schmitt attended as a young child.
Schmitt, 30, represents State Assembly District 99, comprised of Stony Point in Rockland County and part of Orange County, in his second term in the New York State Assembly.

New York’s 18th Congressional District currently comprises all of Orange and Putnam counties and portions of Dutchess and Westchester counties.
It is, Schmitt said, one of just a handful of districts nationwide to have a Republican rating but be represented by a Democrat. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-Cold Spring).

Maloney was just re-elected in November to his fourth term. He told recordonline.com that he was laser-focused on beating the pandemic and providing support for Hudson Valley residents through essential legislation such as the American Rescue Plan.
A sergeant in the Army National Guard, Schmitt is also a licensed commercial real estate agent. He previously served as the chief of staff for the town of New Windsor.
"Hudson Valley families need a strong voice in Washington who will protect taxpayers, create new jobs and stand up for our veterans and first responders," Schmitt said in his announcement. "As a member of Congress, I will lead the fight against the radical socialist ideology that is driving Nancy Pelosi’s agenda and the liberal policies being advanced by Congressional Democrats."
Orange County Clerk Annie Rabbitt and former state Senator Terrence Murphy are co-chairing Schmit's congressional campaign.
"Colin Schmitt will be an outstanding Congressman," Rabbitt said. "I have known Colin since he was in middle school. I saw him grow up here in the Hudson Valley and serve our nation, state, and community with distinction in the military and public service."
Murphy said, "He has been a strong partner in service to the residents of our region and exactly that voice we need representing us in Washington. No one has been better prepared and had more knowledge of this district than Colin Schmitt."
Saying families who live and work in small towns and suburban communities across the district need someone who will bring people together to protect and improve their quality of life, Schmitt added, "I will work every day to deliver real results for Hudson Valley families and defend our values."
