Sen. James Skoufis Leads In Race For 39th Senate District

CORNWALL, NY — Sen. James Skoufis is claiming re-election victory while enjoying healthy lead in the unofficial vote count in the state Senate District 39 race.

"With all Election Day and in-person early vote numbers in, we have comfortably won re-election," Skoufis said Wednesday in a Facebook post.

"Once absentee ballots are counted, which are 2-1 Democratic, we expect to win with a margin at or near 10 percent despite President Trump seemingly prevailing in our Senate District, a reflection of our strong bipartisan support," he said.

Patch reached out to the Brescia campaign for a comment but did not immediately receive a response.

According to county boards of elections, Skoufis, who is currently in his first term, received about 53 percent of the vote, compared with Brescia's 47 percent. That is with 100 percent of district's reporting; all vote counts are unofficial.

Still left to be counted are all mail-in and absentee ballots. Under New York law, mail-in ballots may be received up to seven days after the election — this year, Nov. 10 — as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.

Skoufis, 33, of Cornwall, currently serves as chairman of the Committee on Investigations and Government Operations. He succeeded retiring Republican William Larkin in the 2018 midterm elections.

Brescia, 52, of Montgomery, is currently serving as both the mayor of the village of Montgomery and Orange County legislator for the 9th District.

The 39th Senate District covers Orange County, part of Ulster County and the northern tip of Rockland County.
