Sleeping LI Man Accused Of Drunken Driving

Police said the man was found asleep behind the wheel of a truck stopped on the Thruway.

PLATTEKILL, NY — A Long Island man was accused of drunken driving after being found asleep in his truck on the Thruway in Ulster County.

The New York State Police said, around 4:25 a.m. Sunday, troopers found a Ford F-250 stopped in the right lane on Interstate 87 in the town of Plattekill.

When they got to the truck, Karol Giembic, 41, of Copiague, was asleep behind the wheel. He was the driver and the only occupant.

He was awakened and troopers removed the truck from the roadway.

While interviewing Giembic, troopers discovered he was intoxicated.

He was taken into custody and processed at the Newburgh barracks, where his blood alcohol content was determined to be 0.18 percent.

Giembic was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

He was turned over to a sober third party and released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Plattekill Court March 5.
