Upstate Man Trapped In Car For 10 Hours During Snowstorm

OWEGO, NY — Kevin Kresen of Candor, Tioga County, will have a riveting story to tell about the recent nor'easter that dumped a massive amount of snow around the state.

Thursday morning, as the storm was winding down, Troop C Zone Sergeant Jason Cawley called Tioga County 911 to find out if there were any pending emergency calls because of the storm.

He was told there had been a number of calls from a man who had run off the road and needed help. However, area law enforcement had not been able to locate the man.

Cawley drove to a section of Route 17C in the town of Owego, Tioga County, to patrol the area, but he couldn't find the driver either.

He did, however, see what he thought to be a row of mailboxes and waded through the snow to find out the addresses.

While digging, Cawley hit the windshield of a car.

Inside the car, was Kresen, who had been calling 911.

After speaking with the 58-year-old, Cawley found the man had been plowed in by a truck, and his car was covered with almost 4 feet of snow.

Kresen had been stranded for more than 10 hours, with no heat, due to a broken serpentine belt.

He was suffering from hypothermia and frostbite, police said.

After being removed from his car, Kresen was taken to Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, Broome County, for treatment.
