Academy Charter School parents meet Mayor Ryan Following Vigil

Parents meet with Mayor Ryan following Village Hall vigil demanding transparency in zoning battle that endangers students

Following a protest vigil by parents and students from Academy Charter School, Hempstead Village Mayor Don Ryan has agreed to postpone a planning board hearing on a proposal parents warn could endanger their children. The vigil included protestors holding large eyeballs that demanded transparency and full community involvement in reviewing a proposal they say is being fast tracked by influential developers and their lobbyists. Academy Charter School parents say they will continue to insist on government transparency, due process, and the developer’s need to reach out to the community. As the vigil approached Village Hall the Mayor left his office to meet with a delegation from the school to discuss their concerns and announce that he will reschedule the planning session so he can review the issue further.
