Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- Two teen boys robbed a group of five teens at gunpoint at the Roosevelt Field Mall parking lot in East Garden City on Friday night. After taking their victims' possessions, the assailants stole the BMW 330i they were riding in and drove it southbound on the Meadowbrook State Parkway until they crashed into a Hyundai sedan. Police came to the accident scene and arrested the teens, while the driver of the Hyundai was taken to a hospital and treated for non- life-threatening injuries. (Mineola Patch)
- The first female Mayor and Trustee of the Village of Mineola, Ann Galante, was posthumously awarded with a spot on the John S. DaVanzo Wall of Honor in the Village Community Center. Galante served as Mayor of Mineola from 1985 until 1991, when she became the Town of North Hempstead's Receiver of Taxes. During her term as mayor, Galante introduced the village's summer recreational program and helped orchestrate the first Mineola concert by the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra. (The Island Now)
- The United Way of Long Island recently awarded scholarships to 10 nursing students at Nassau Community College in Garden City as part of its DREAMS for Youth Scholarship. Recognizing the high demand for and importance of nurses, the United Way awarded ten $1000 scholarships. (Press Release Desk)
