Mineola Hospital's New Pet Therapy Program Draws 'Aws': PHOTOS
NYU Winthrop Hospital has launched its much-anticipated "WAGS" program.
MINEOLA, NY — Mineola has a new pet therapy program, and suffice to say there have been plenty of smiles and "Aws."
NYU Winthrop Hospital launched its much-anticipated program "WAGS," an acronym for Winthrop's Animals Give Support. A schnauzer poodle named Schnoodles and a miniature golden doodle named Oliver made rounds among patients and in public areas to the delight of young kids and older adults, easing stress among hospital-goers as they went. The dynamic duo were especially popular among families in the hosptal's main waiting area, NYU said in a news release, as well as among passing staff members who simply couldn't resist a quick meet-and-greet.
Pet therapy will be offered to patients upon request, the hospital said. Officials plan to offer pet therapy twice a week at first, eventually growing to include daily dog visits.

Jean Zebroski, director of volunteer services at the hospital, said they take a "holistic view" of patient care that addresses physical as well as mental and spiritual needs.
"Petting or hugging an adorable dog can be such a stress reliever, and so many of our patients have pets as well, so these visits are warm reminders of their best friends waiting for them at home," Zebroski said.

Studies have shown pet therapy can benefit patient health. Fibromyalgia patients have reported pain reduction and improved mood. Pediatric cancer patients have seen their motivation to participate in treatment protocols increase as well.
