MINEOLA, NY — Mineola's Harrison Avenue parking garage has reached six stories as crews inch closer to completing the precast concrete construction. Video published this week by the MTA shows crane workers raising a section to the sixth floor.

The new parking garage, part of the Long Island Rail Road Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, will add 551 spaces — a net increase of 446 spots — and will replace the surface parking area.

The garage will serve both train commuters and the downtown section, and is meant to help accommodate growing ridership in the area.

Crews have deployed a modular construction method, meaning forms, such as the columns at LIRR stations, aren't necessary. Sections of the building are delivered to the site and then assembled and connected. After the sections are assembled, architectural, plumbing, electrical and communications systems are installed.
