Mineola Students 'Recycle, Reuse, Rethink' in N. Hempstead Art Contest
A group of sixth graders won the "Best Use of Recycled Materials" category.
Several Mineola students were among more than 1,000 students throughout the Town of North Hempstead who were invited to participate in a recycled art contest at the Gold Coast Arts Center on Monday.
As part of the Seventh Annual Annual Recycled Artwork Contest, students used recyclable materials that otherwise would have been dumped in landfills. They created artwork made of metal, paper, rubber, plastic or cloth to create their own piece of art.
This contest looked to spread the “Recycle, Reuse and Rethink” message.
Many elected officials were in attendance, including Town Clerk Wayne Wink, Councilman Peter Zuckerman, Councilwoman Anna Kaplan and Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth.
“This contest is one of the many wonderful environmental initiatives with which the Town is involved all year long, including so many that involve our local schools,” Bosworth said in a press release. “And I am proud to say that for the first time this year, we have all 11 school districts in the Town participating in the program, as we were proud to welcome Mineola and Roslyn earlier this fall.”
Nearly three dozen students won in various categories, including: Environmental Message, Best Use of Recycled Materials and Creativity.
Those who participated were judged in the Elementary, Middle School, High School and Group categories.
All entries will be on display until Jan. 1 in the gallery at the Gold Coast Arts Center, located at 113 Middle Neck Road in Great Neck.
