Nassau County Residents Live Among Longest Lives In Nation

MINEOLA, NY — Nassau County residents live long lives compared to the rest of the country. That's according to a new report published Wednesday by the personal finance site 24/7 Wall St., which reviewed 2014 county-level life expectancy at birth figures from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

With a life expectancy of 82.21 years, Nassau County ranked 45th in the country, just ahead of Oliver County, North Dakota, and behind Stevens County, Minnesota.

• Change in life expectancy, 1980-2014: +10.6 percent
• Poverty: 5.9 percent
• Adult obesity: 23.2 percent

Residents in counties with longer life expectancy tend to lead healthier lifestyles, the report said.

"Relatively fewer adults in these counties smoke or are obese, and more tend to be physically active," the researchers wrote. "Not surprisingly, based on behavioral measures like these, many of these counties rank among the healthiest in the country."

Five Colorado counties ranked among the 10 with the longest life expectancy, including Summit County, where residents can expect to live nearly 87 years — longer than anywhere else in the United States.

1. Summit County, Colorado: 86.83 years

2. Pitkin County, Colorado: 86.52 years

3. Eagle County, Colorado: 85.94 years

4. Billings County, North Dakota: 84.04 years

5. Marin County, California: 83.80 years

6. Aleutians East Borough, Alaska: 83.73 years

7. San Miguel County, Colorado: 83.73 years

8. Fairfax County, Virginia: 83.73 years

9. Presidio County, Texas: 83.72 years

10. Douglas County, Colorado: 83.72 years
