Strong Thunderstorms Approaching Long Island

BREAKING: Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring in a round of storms that is making its way toward Long Island. Hail is possible.

UPDATE from the NWS: At 5:43 p.m., a strong thunderstorm was located over Plainview, moving east at 15 mph. Winds in excess of 30 mph and pea size hail are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include... Islip, Brentwood, Levittown, Commack, Huntington Station, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Plainview, Massapequa, Hauppauge, Ronkonkoma, Syosset, Huntington, Babylon and Farmingdale.

Strong thunderstorms are expected to hit Long Island Tuesday afternoon. A special weather statement has been issued for Nassau County.

At 3:26 p.m,, a strong thunderstorm was located over Jersey City, moving east at 30 mph, the National Weather Service says. Winds in excess of 30 mph and half inch hail are possible with this storm.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is also occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

There is an isolated risk for flash flooding through this evening on the island.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. West wind 7 to 9 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 74. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 90. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.
