Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Nassau County

Damaging winds and possibly a weak tornado are expected on Long Island this week.

UPDATE 3:10 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm watch is now in effect until 10 p.m. for Nassau County. This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. A severe thunderstorm by definition is a thunderstorm that produces one inch hail or larger in diameter and/or winds equal or exceed 58 miles an hour.

LONG ISLAND — The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Long Island, calling for possible severe thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday.

There is a slight risk of severe storms in Nassau and western Suffolk counties, mainly between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday. That severe weather risk is a bit lower on the East End, according to the weather service.

The main threat from the storms are damaging winds and possibly a weak tornado, forecasters said. There's also a chance of large hail that could damage vehicles.

Mother Nature calms down overnight into Thursday morning, but then the chance of severe weather returns.

"An isolated strong to severe thunderstorm is possible Thursday afternoon into early evening," the weather service said in a hazardous weather outlook issued for the entire island.

This is the latest Long Island forecast:

Wednesday- A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Light east wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Wednesday Night- A chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9pm and 3am, then a slight chance of showers after 3am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog after 11pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Thursday- A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. Heat index values as high as 96. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph.

Friday- A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. North wind 5 to 7 mph becoming northeast in the afternoon.

Friday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 70.

Saturday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 84.

Saturday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 70.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 87.
