Montauk Beach Closures Announced As Restoration Work Kicks Off

MONTAUK, NY — Storm-socked beaches in Montauk will be the focus of restoration efforts in the coming days, town officials said Tuesday.

Following the loss of sand from the ocean beach in downtown Montauk and at Ditch Plains, East
Hampton Town has arranged for immediate sand replenishment to make the areas safer and more
hospitable for beachgoers, town officals added.

Beach areas will be temporary closed during the restoration work. Work schedules are weather
dependent and will be coordinated around the tide cycle. Work will begin Wednesday at the downtown beach between South Edison and South Emery Streets, and continue on Thursday and Friday.

Bathing areas, with lifeguards, will be open outside the work zone, to the east of South Edison
Street and at Kirk Park beach to the west, East Hampton Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc's office said in a release.

Lifeguards and marine patrol officers will be stationed at the downtown beach overpasses to
inform the public of the closed area and direct them to usable beach, as well as to coordinate safe
passage onto the beach east of South Edison Street.

At Ditch Plains, the exposed hard pan will be covered with white beach sand in a designated
600-foot area, with work to begin on Monday, June 28, and continue through June 30, town officials added.

The beach from just west of Otis Avenue will be closed during the restoration work.

"Please be patient, and avoid work zones. The addition of sand now will help enable peaenjoyment of the beach throughout the summer," town officials said.
