On "Live Music" at Surf Lodge: Some Cooperation.

Still sadly many local musicians will lose important Memorial Day payday.

The saga goes like this. A few musical friends were not happy because their gigs at the Surf Lodge in Montauk were canceled costing them always needed money. That lead to an interview with Surf Lodge owner Jayma Cardoso (that was printed on the following website link listed below). Then East Hampton Supervisor Larry Cantwell emailed me that what was printed was "totally wrong." I offered him the opportunity to compose his respond that Patch.com printed unedited, But infront of all this is a statement by Jayma Cardoso hopefulling ending this saga on a high note.

"We have been in contact with Mr. Cantwell and he has been very helpful in our efforts with the SLA. He has the best interests of the hamlet at heart, as do we. We are confident that the permit issues will be resolved in several weeks and the long standing tradition of providing live music will endure. We are in agreement that as a community that we, and all businesses, are in compliance with state regulations."

East Hampton Supervisor Larry Cantwell's response .

"The Town was contacted by the Surf Lodge just a week ago and following their appearance before a SLA hearing at which the Surf Lodge was informed by the SLA their license did not permit music.

While the Town has issued a number of violations at Surf Lodge pending since last summer the SLA licensing issue with respect to music was brought out by the SLA. The Town's issues have been about over-crowding, zoning, and noise. Important public safety and environmental issues.
Surf Lodge contacted me regarding their SLA issue following their SLA hearing and I promptly met with them and offered the Town's assistance provided Surf Lodge agree to resolve their outstanding issues with the Town.
The Town's enforcement efforts following last July 4th's outlandish conduct in Montauk has never been about outlawing music. I repeat this for those who want to portray this as the Town acting otherwise. It has been and will continue to be about enforcing the community 's well established zoning, public safety, and others laws to maintain the quality of life I believe the community supports and demands.
In my view some of the issues the public cried out for in Montauk last summer were ignored by the Town for far too many years. Bringing these to resolution will require a balanced level of enforcement and cooperation.
We stand ready to cooperate with Surf Lodge and any other business seeking help. We only ask they respect the well established laws of the community."
