Montauk Named 1 Of 10 Best Beach Towns On East Coast: Report

Known for its gorgeous beaches, dramatic bluffs and yes, that iconic lighthouse, Montauk got a national shout-out recently.

MONTAUK, NY — The rest of the world is onto a secret that locals have known for years: Montauk is sheer paradise.

Recently, Condé Nast Traveler gave Montauk, known as "The End," a shout-out, naming it one of the Top 10 beach towns on the East Coast.

"Due to strong winds, rough surf, and ample preserved land, it really does feel like the edge of the world, here. . . Montauk feels more remote and low-key than its luxurious, sceney Hamptons counterparts," the post read.

The post also suggested visitors make sure to see the Montauk Point Lighthouse.

According to the Lighthouse's website, the Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State, authorized by the Second Congress, under President George Washington, in 1792. Construction began on June 7, 1796, and was completed on November 5, 1796; it still serves as an aid to navigation, the site said. The Montauk Point Lighthouse was designated a National Historic Landmark on March 5, 2012.

Montauk has also gotten a flurry of attention after both the shows "Stranger Things" and "The Affair" brought the area into the national spotlight. And visitors headed out to Montauk often stop at The Lobster Roll, known affectionately as "LUNCH," which was recently named #1 for Foodies in New York.
