10 Fake ‘Lucky Pennies’ Dropped in New York City Worth $1,000 Each

Head's up, or head's down, the "penny" is still worth a grand to whoever picks it up.

NEW YORK, NY — Finders keepers. You may want to think twice before walking past a penny you see lying on the sidewalk in New York City. Ally Bank dropped 10 "Lucky Pennies" in each of 10 different cities around the United States, and if you find one, it's worth 100,000 pennies — that's $1,000 if you're not quick with the math.

The coins were dropped not only around the digital bank’s home turf in Detroit, but also in Austin, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago; Los Angeles; Miami; New York City; San Diego; and Washington, D.C.

Ally reminds searchers that all pennies are located in "plain sight," so no need to break into abandoned properties or trespass on private land.

The faux pennies are part of a bank campaign that emphasizes the importance of valuing every cent and looking for opportunities to save money, according to the bank’s website. On the "head" of each penny is an Ally Bank logo, while on the “tail” of each Ally Lucky Penny is a redemption code that can be entered at AllyLuckyPenny.com to begin the verification process. Coins can be redeemed through Dec. 31.

The pennies are copper-colored, but larger than real pennies. The number 100,000 on the back represents the value of the coin in cents.
