After a long, cold winter, spring is finally in the air — especially at the Bronx Zoo. From 265 acres of forest in full bloom to inspiring stories of our incredible animals (including some adorable new babies!), here are five refreshing reasons to visit the Bronx Zoo this spring.

1. Time in Nature Reduces Stress

Stop scrolling and start strolling through nature. According to new research from Cornell, as little as 10 minutes in a natural setting can help people feel happier and lessen the effects of both mental and physical stress. After such a stressful year, it’s the perfect time to refresh your senses and your outlook by spending a day in 265 acres of hardwood forest at the Bronx Zoo.

2. The Bronx Zoo’s Commitment to Wildlife

Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal, which is the perfect time to learn about the Bronx Zoo’s commitment to wildlife, and how the Wildlife Conservation Society works to save, propagate and sustain populations of threatened and endangered species, such as the Tanzania Kihansi spray toads, which were saved, bred and reintroduced into the wild. The Bronx Zoo also played a crucial role in the reintroduction of American bison to the Western plains and Eastern hellbenders to New York’s rivers. It’s all part of an effort to save wildlife that the Wildlife Conservation Society began 120 years ago.

3. A Charming New Friend Named Amos

Amos is a White Pelican with a big personality and an even bigger story. In 2016, Amos was found in Texas with drooping wings and was unable to fly. After surgery and rehabilitation, it was determined that due to the extent of his injury, he could not be released back into the wild. After fully recovering, Amos has finally found his long-term home at the Bronx Zoo in our Wild Encounters programs, where his engaging personality delights keepers and visitors alike. If you join us for a session, you may catch Amos as a surprise guest. Wild Encounters allow you to meet our animal ambassadors up close, in person or virtually, and chat with the experts who care for them.

4. A New Gelada Baby

Have a real wildlife experience when you visit the outdoor Baboon Reserve exhibit, representative of the natural habitat of the geladas’ native Ethiopian highlands. There’s a new gelada baby that will melt your heart, “To watch the young gelada race around the hillside, jumping and interacting with the adults is an experience not to be missed. It is an inspiring sight that transports you to the East African highlands.” said Jim Breheny, WCS Executive Vice President and General Director of WCS’s Zoos and Aquarium.
