California Added To New York’s Coronavirus Quarantine List

NEW YORK CITY — The Golden State lost some of its luster in the Empire State.

California is now part of New York’s coronavirus travel advisory, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday. It’s now one of 41 states and territories with high rates of COVID-19 spread from which travelers must quarantine for 14 days.

Massachusetts also now qualifies to be added to the list, but Cuomo spared its inclusion. Like New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania — all of which qualify for the list — he judged a quarantine for Massachusetts to be impractical given its close ties to the state.

Non-essential travel to and from Massachusetts is “discouraged,” a release states.

"Now, 45 states and territories meet the requirements for our travel advisory,” Cuomo said in a statement. “We cannot let our guard down and risk going backwards in New York. It's going to take the work of all of us to remain vigilant. Stay NY Smart - wear a mask, socially distance and follow the public health guidance. It's there to save lives."

New York’s statewide positivity rate is 1.53 percent outside of color-coded “zones” of localized coronavirus spikes. Those zones’ positivity rate is 3.65, officials said.
