De Blasio To 9K NYC Employees: Prepare For Furloughs

The furloughs starting October will hit staff who are managers and will save $21 million amid a budget crisis, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Bill de Blasio and his staff won't be the only city employees taking furloughs thanks to a looming budget crisis.

More than 9,000 managers and city employees not under union contracts will be temporarily laid off for five days between October and March, de Blasio announced Wednesday.

The furloughs will save the city $21 million, he said.

“Again, something that's very painful to have to announce — it has real human consequences, but it is necessary,” he said.

De Blasio has warned of 22,000 layoffs starting in October if the city doesn't receive federal aid or state permission to borrow to help plug a $9 billion budget gap from the coronavirus crisis.

Last week, he announced his office — including himself as a symbolic gesture — will take furloughs.

The further furloughs unveiled Wednesday will help provide relief from permanent layoffs while city and union officials press lawmakers in Albany for relief, de Blasio said.

Those layoffs remain "on the table" if relief falls through, de Blasio said.
