Empire State Building Sports Philadelphia Eagles Green In Viral Fumble

NEW YORK CITY ? The Empire State Building is in an online dogpile of Giants-sized proportions.

After the Philadelphia Eagles clinched a trip to the Super Bowl Sunday, the iconic building lit up in green and white to honor the much-hated ? by New York sports fans, at least ? team.

Fair to say, the lighting choice and accompanying tweet ruffled more than a few Giants and Jets fans' feathers.

"King Kong should have destroyed you," wrote freelance journalist Astrid Martinez in one of 13,000 overwhelmingly negative replies to the Empire State Building's tweet.

Other Twitter users were more puzzled than anything.

"This isn't a headline from The Onion?" tweeted sports reporter Trey Wingo.

The Eagles are more than just the bitter rivals to the hometown New York Giants. A little more than a week ago, the Eagles dashed the Giants' Super Bowl chances in 38-7 loss that made them look like pipsqueaks.

Many Giants fans thus viewed the Empire State Building's brief transformation into the Keystone State Building (as some jokingly called it) as adding insult to injury.

And the colorful display carried an added potential slight for long-suffering Jets fans.

"Theory: Maybe they had that color ready for the Jets and were tired of waiting," tweeted Brett Edgerton, an ESPN employee.

The Empire State Building, or at least its Twitter account, offered a mea culpa of sorts later Sunday.

"That hurt us more than it hurt you," it tweeted.

The building then lit up in red to honor the Kansas City Chiefs' AFC Championship win.

But the change wasn't enough for many fans.

"The Chrysler Building never had to sell its soul like this," wrote one.
