Fair Fares Expansion: More NYers Qualify For Discount MetroCards

The city expanded its discount MetroCard program Monday to include New Yorkers below the federal poverty line.

NEW YORK CITY — More New Yorkers just became eligible for the city's discount subway ride program.

Open enrollment launched Monday for the MTA's Fair Fares program, which will provide discounted MetroCards to New York City residents, between the ages of 18 and 64, below the federal poverty line.

Fare Fair MetroCards will cost $63.50, half the price of the regular monthly unlimited, officials said.

Only New Yorkers who meet specific income requirements are eligible. A single person must earn no more than $12,760 a year, a couple no more than $17,240 a year and a household of eight can bring in no more than $44,120 a year.

The first phase of the rollout, which began in January 2019, included NYCHA residents, CUNY students, veterans and those receiving SNAP benefits.

“The MTA is committed to providing the most affordable transportation options possible to all New Yorkers," said MTA Chief Operating Officer Mario Péloquin.

"We’re glad the City is expanding ‘Fair Fares’ so that more New Yorkers will have access to this important program."
