Family Owned Millwork Factory Destroyed in Fire

A factory fire in Sunnyside burned for four hours on Wednesday night.

A fire that broke out at the Millwork Factory in Queens on Wednesday evening at about 7:30 p.m. was under control by 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, but firefighters remained on the scene into Thursday.

Two-hundred and fifty firefighters worked to put out the five-alarm fire. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries. No one else was hurt.

The single story warehouse located at 37th Street in Sunnyside was a family-owned woodwork and interior design company and the material inside fueled the fire, fire officials said. The factory was closed at the time meaning no employees were inside.

"It had a lot of wood, laquers, thinners and paint in shop which led to a quick fire spread," FDNY Chief James Leonard said.

According to officials, residents were warned to close their windows due to the thick black smoke and concern over how it could endanger the locals.
