Outdoor Movies In NYC: Free Local Screenings For Summer 2017

Skip the lines at the theater this summer and lie out on the grass for a free outdoor movie.

NEW YORK, NY — Film buffs have the chance to enjoy the summer with several free outdoor movie screenings planned throughout the city. Grab a blanket and a picnic and check out these scheduled viewings:


Brooklyn


WNYC Transmitter Park

Organized by Town Square, a volunteer and community-based organization, the 13th annual SummerStarz free outdoor movie series returns to Greenpoint’s WNYC Transmitter Park on July 7. Friday-night films will be shown through Aug. 11 at 8 p.m. along the East River waterfront at Greenpoint Avenue.

This year’s lineup includes “Inside Out,” “Zootopia,” “Moana,” “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2,” Kung Fu Panda 3” and “Grease.” The full schedule is set for release in the coming weeks.

McCarren Park

SummerScreen turns 12 this year at Williamsburg’s McCarren Park. Held Wednesdays, the film and music series offers a lineup of cult classic movies, live music and food and drink from local vendors. Doors are at 6 p.m., music at 7 p.m. and films beginning at sundown.

  • July 26: I Know What You Did Last Summer

Prospect Park

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, in partnership with the Prospect Park Alliance, presents free summer movie screenings this year. Per the Prospect Park Alliance website, entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. and the movie will start shortly after sunset.

  • July 22: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
  • July 29: Where the Wild Things Are
  • Aug. 5: The Hunger Games: Mockinjay Part 1
  • Aug. 12: Happy Feet

Manhattan


Bryant Park

Bryant Park recently kicked off its 25th HBO Bryant Park Film Festival on June 19 with “King Kong.” Held on the Bryant Park lawn, the outdoor screenings typically begin between 8 and 9 p.m. The lawn opens at 5 p.m., and filmgoers are encouraged to arrive early to find space for their blankets. Food and drink vendors will be on site from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Queens


Socrates Sculpture Park

Long Island City’s Socrates Sculpture Park hosts an international film festival Wednesdays from July to August in celebration of Queens’ cultural diversity. Prescreening performances will take place at 7 p.m., with films starting at sundown. The annual presentation is a collaboration between the park, non-profit movie theater Film Forum and traveling film and arts curator Rooftop Films.
