Temperatures will soar close to 100 this weekend with an even more oppressive heat index due to high humidity. In anticipation, the National Weather Service has released a Heat Advisory for all five boroughs beginning at noon on Friday and lasting until 7 p.m. on Saturday. A heat advisory is issued whenever the heat index is forecast to reach 95 degrees for two consecutive days.

"Extreme heat affects people of all ages, but some New Yorkers are more vulnerable than others, especially the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions," New York City Commissioner Joseph Esposito said in a statement. “Stay safe by staying cool — use air conditioning, drink lots of water and check in on friends and family."

Along with the heat, an Air Quality Advisory has been put in place for Friday due to heavy smog levels. The state warns people sensitive to elevated ground-level smog should avoid prolonged periods outdoors and limit exercise.
