Heat, Humidity to Last Through Weekend Into Next Week

If you're looking to sweat out a few pounds, we've got good news for you.

Anyone looking to sweat out a few pounds this weekend should just head to the subway platforms.

The city will continue to be under oppressively hot and humid temperatures throughout the weekend and well into next week. The National Weather Service has put a heat advisory into place through 8 p.m. on Saturday, but don't be surprised to see that extended even longer. The NWS puts a heat advisory in place when heat index numbers reach into the mid-90s for a period of two days.

"The extreme heat our city will experience in the coming days is dangerous, and can be fatal, especially for vulnerable populations like seniors and people with chronic medical conditions," said Mayor Bill de Blasio in a statement. "I encourage every New Yorker to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves during this extended period of intense heat."

Thursday's high of 89 degrees will just be an appetizer for 100-degree heat index temperatures on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The NWS warns the heat index will reach 105 on Saturday, one of the hottest numbers of the summer.

“The warm temperatures expected this week will be especially dangerous to vulnerable New Yorkers, so check in on older neighbors and friends with underlying medical conditions,” said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “To stay cool, make sure you use air conditioning or visit a cooling center, and drink lots of water.”

The temperature hasn't reached 95 since July 28, and no days in August have been 90 or above. The next week will be a throwback to the end of July when temperatures reached 90 five days in a row, including the hottest day of the year when it reached 96 on July 23.

The forecast highs for the next five days (heat index in parentheses):

  • Thursday, Aug. 11: 89 degrees (97)
  • Friday, Aug. 12: 90 degrees (99)
  • Saturday, Aug. 13: 94 degrees (105)
  • Sunday, Aug. 14: 91 degrees
  • Monday, Aug. 15: 87 degrees

There is at least a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms each afternoon.

New York City has opened cooling centers for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The centers are opened anytime the heat index reaches the mid-90s. To find your nearest cooling center, visit here.
