Here Are The Coronavirus Rates In NYC ZIP Codes Facing Shutdown

Confirmed COVID-19 test rates in hotspot neighborhoods all hover over 3 percent — and reach as high as 8.31 percent in Borough Park.

NEW YORK CITY — Positive coronavirus tests in nine coronavirus hotspots in Brooklyn and Queens facing potential localized shutdowns have clocked in at over 3 percent — and sometimes well over — for more than a week, officials said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday awaited state approval of his proposal to close schools and non-essential businesses in COVID-19 clusters.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo responded by announcing public and private schools in those areas will close Tuesday.

Those neighborhoods have positive test rates far above the city's overall 1.4 percent, according to state data.

De Blasio acknowledged in an interview on CNN's New Day that the proposed shutdowns could be painful for communities and businesses looking to bounce back from the virus.

"But this is to make sure that this virus does not spread more deeply in those communities and threaten lives, and that does not spread to the rest of the city," he said. "So, it's a measure I think we have to take to contain the situation before it gets any worse."
