JFK's Terminal 5 Briefly Evacuated Over Bomb Scare

The bomb squad was called in, but the suspicious luggage was found to be of no harm.

JFK's Terminal 5 was evacuated briefly Wednesday morning with security on high alert in the wake of a terrorist bombing in Istanbul, Turkey.

A Port Authority police dog indicated a threat from an unattended bag in the terminal and it was immediately evacuated at 8:30 a.m., according to Port Authority police. Police called in the bomb squad to investigate. The bomb squad did a sweep of the bag and it was cleared to allow customers back into the airport, according to Port Authority.

Eyewitness reports on Twitter indicate the terminal was re-opened to customers shortly before 10 a.m.

Port Authority police have added high visibility patrols equipped with tactical weapons and equipment at Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports, according to the Port Authority, after an attack that killed at least 39 people at the Istanbul airport on Tuesday.
