Laverne Cox And Rosario Dawson Take The Stage At Tribeca TV Talks

Daniela's Lens takes you front row to another Tribeca TV Talks event with Laverne Cox moderating a special Q&A for actress Rosario Dawson!

Laverne Cox sat down with Rosario Dawson to discuss Dawson's unusual career which led her from acting to being a fashion brand entrepreneur to passionate activist. The two friends took the stage during Tribeca TV Talks to reminiscence Dawson's prolific journey from television actress to activism. Laverne Cox is most commonly know for her starring role on the popular Netflix show "Orange Is The New Black" as well as her active support of the LGBTQ community.

Rosario Dawson's first appearance goes all the way back to her role in the classic film "Kids" where she would then go on to star in many movies and TV shows. She most recently co-founded Studio 189, an apparel brand that produces African-inspired clothing.

The event was sponsored by TUMI as part of the Tribeca Film Festival, where Daniela's Lens has been covering all of the latest red carpet premieres and special cast moments for Patch. Take a look below:

6:09 p.m.
Rosario Dawson arrives on the carpet. I can't believe it's over 20 years ago since I first saw her on screen in Kids with Chloë Sevigny.

"A lot of people are romanticizing the nineties in New York City and you don't realize how dangerous it was" Dawson says as she describes her upbringing in downtown Manhattan to the audience during the Q&A. "They had tanks rolling down 13th street and 24/7 police surveillance for years to get rid of the squatters. And now it's so gentrified."

6:12 p.m.
"I watched as the electricity came in and people started closing their doors," explains Rosario the changes in her community in the nineties. "I watched it on a small scale and now do this with cell phones."
"I'm stepping over a homeless person while on my way to a fundraiser that is for African people, and there are no African people at the event," she says.

6:11 p.m.
"How is your daughter?" one of the photographers asks Rosario.
"She is very well! She just shaved her head!" she says.

6:15 p.m.
Laverne Cox is here!

6:18 p.m.
"I watch you, and you always seem to have so much fun!" Rosario says to Laverne.
"Yes! I think it's important to see trans folks living their best life! And I try to show that on my Instagram!" Laverne says.

6:13 p.m.
During the talk, Laverne asks: "At what point did you realize that you need to take care of yourself?"
"I just hit rock bottom in the last few years. My 26-year-old cousin died, and I found her in my apartment. And I realized it could be over tomorrow." says Rosario.
