Map: NYC's Most Popular Dog Names By Neighborhood

NEW YORK, NY — Each year, as a cute and clickbaity way of nagging New Yorkers to license their dogs (it's the law!), the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene draws up an interactive map of the city's most popular dog names, neighborhood by neighborhood, based on all the new dogs registered in the system.

The latest map, which pulls data from 2016, just dropped Friday morning.

So what's the most popular dog name in NYC? For the ninth year in a row, city officials said, No. 1 is "Bella." ("Possibly because of the Twilight book series," health officials speculated last year.)

And just like last year, the second most popular dog name in NYC — or the first for male dogs — is "Max."

Officials said they also noticed some "interesting patterns" emerge in 2016: A bunch of dogs were named after fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs, they said, as well as other types of animals. Those lists are below.

The department then mapped out the most "uniquely popular" dog names by neighborhood — in other words, names that are "much more popular in a specific neighborhood than they are citywide."

In northern Crown Heights, for example, "Shaggy" was the No. 6 most popular dog name in 2016, although it ranked way down at 173rd citywide. And on the Upper West Side, "Hudson" was the No. 12 most popular name, compared to 93rd citywide.
