Mayor Promises NYC Macy’s July 4th Fireworks Show

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Bill de Blasio promised New York City its annual Macy's Fourth of July fireworks display days after cancelling Pride and the Puerto Rican Day parade.

"It is a sacred day each year, it’s part of our effort to fight back," de Blasio said. "This is a celebration that has to happen."

Macy’s CEO Jeffrey Gennette and de Blasio will discuss how to host the patriotic display amid a widespread novel coronavirus outbreak that currently has all but New York's essential workers cloistered at home.

"It will be something that takes into consideration safety," de Blasio said during his daily press briefing Wednesday.

“But one thing we know for sure, we will celebrate the Fourth of July in New York City.”

The mayor, who has already cancelled all parades and events for May and June, promised to release a summer plan in the weeks ahead to address how the city will manage its beaches and public spaces.

De Blasio has also promised New York City a ticker tape parade once it becomes safe for New Yorkers to gather in large groups.

"When the day comes when we can have parades again," de Blasio said, "This will be the first thing we'd do."
